The accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh have opened up a heated debate on may issues.  The questions are seemingly endless.

Is he telling the truth that nothing happened?
Is Christine Blasey Ford telling the truth when she says Kavanaugh held a hand over her mouth and forced himself on her at a high school party, fondling her against her will?
Do they both accurately remember what happened or didn't happen decades ago?
Should your behavior in high school determine your fate as an adult, 36 years later?
Is there any evidence?
Are there any reliable witnesses who were there or that either Kavanaugh or Ford told in the 1980s about whatever did or didn't happen?
Will allegations from childhood become standard in political races and nominations going forward?

Those just scratch the surface.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Before we touch any of those questions, I think there is one more that is of more immediate need of being answered:

IF all of the allegations are true, will that change the outcome of the Senate vote on Kavanaugh?

We need to know that before a decision can be made about how to proceed.  If it will change how enough senators plan to vote, then the investigation must be done before they take up the nomination. However, if Kavanaugh will win the seat either way, why not go ahead with the vote?  The investigation could still proceed.

Lawyers for Ford say that before she testifies before a Senate committee, she wants the FBI to investigate her allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley says an FBI investigation wouldn't have any bearing on Ford's testimony so ``there is no reason for further delay.''

Ford's attorneys insist her life has been hell since she went public with here allegations. They say she has received ``vicious harassment and even death threats.''

If enough senators will vote against Kavanaugh, IF the allegations are found to be credible or true... then there MUST be an investigation before a vote.  There is no taking it back after the fact.

ARE WE OUR TEENAGE SELVES A GENERATION LATER?

My very first thought when I heard Ford's allegations was actually to my childhood.  I started to wonder if there is anything in my teen years or before that could come up and ruin my life.  Now, I know that I never raped anyone or forcefully fondled anyone against their will.  However, I got to thinking of past relationships and about dumb things that teens sometimes do.

I did things in high school and college that I would never do as an adult.  I think most people did.  We grow and mature with age.  At least we should.  I know I have.

Just to be clear, I never committed any felonies or horrendously inappropriate actions, but did make some less than perfectly responsible decisions that I would not make now.

Do those imperfect decisions then define me now?

I think they do contribute to my overall character, but I am definitely not the same person (intellectually) now that I was as a teen.

By the way, that is my year book picture from high school above next to a more recent picture taken here at WWL.

LESSONS FOR OUR TEENS

I have raised four children, and still have one teenager.  This can be a learning opportunity for him.  I do plan to have a chat about how allegations from Kavanaugh's teen years are now potentially derailing his success as an adult.  We will talk about how what you do in your childhood could have far reaching impacts on your potential decades later.

FALSE ALLEGATIONS?

If Ford is not telling the truth, then this is horribly unfair to Kavanaugh, his family and - quite frankly - the American people.  If she was coerced to fabricate this story, then I think this is a disgustingly low level of politics that have no place in our society.  If lies, then it diminishes actual victims of sexual assault.

On the flip side, if she is telling the truth... and Kavanaugh is lying, then that tells us a lot about him as a man, a human and a judge.  Would you want a justice on the US Supreme Court who would lie about committing a sexually assault, even if it was decades ago?

LISTENERS SOUND OFF

We talked about all of this on the Early Edition of WWL First News today from 5:00am to 6:00am.  Our listeners were eager to join the conversation and raised a number of other points too.

Here is what they texted to us at 870870 between 5:00am and 6:00am:

  • I'm a woman and i hate hate victim blaming, but this one is difficult to sort out in my brain. I'm also such a different person than who I was in high school... Ugh.
  • This is ridiculous. Even if this happened, is there no allowance for youthful indiscretion? I think #metoo has gone too far
  • A story about 2 promiscuous teenagers exploring their emotions in the heat of a moment embellished by one of the individuals that is now currently having financial troubles. Sounds very suspect to me. Maybe he did put his hand over her mouth because he knew she was a screamer during sex? Maybe he broke off their infatuated relationship and she is now only taken her revenge? Lots to consider.
  • She is a liberal democrat activist who has dressed up as a vagina and this is all about roe vs Wade
  • There's a reason we have the evidence rules we have and while I like that women are being heard, I also think we are convicting men without due process.
  • People easily believed the women in the Cosby situation
  • she's being used by the dems as a vehicle to character assassinate cavanaugh....
  • Why is this woman so fragile that she can't get over this and is still bringing it up 2012 to a therapist? I was mugged in HS at a party. My watch stolen. It doesn't form any part of my mentality now.
  • What happen to until proven guilty
  • She psychologically compartmentalized it. What ever that means.
  • Do Your Research: The FBI Investigated Clarence Thomas AFTER The Anita Hill Accusations In 1991. The JUDICIARY COMMITTEE Asked The FBI To INVESTIGATE! Those Are The DOCUMENTED FACTS!!!
  • High school! This is about something that happened when they were in highschool and drunk. Seriously?!?? And nothing really happened!
  • Is it still a lie if the person really believes the story and can convincingly retell it? Even if that memory is tainted? I think this is just political bs and we need to move on. Accusers now for sexual harassment is the new "Reds under the bed" no substance just ruination
  • Sometimes we go to far with accusations which makes legit cases suffer. So sad
  • It amazes me how much tax dollars are wasted on digging up dirt on Republicans, when the Democrats should be the ones being investigated.
  • Democrats are hypocrites. Thomas Bork smoked marijuana when he was in college. Dems said he was not qualified because of it. Bill Clinton smoked marijuana and they gave him a pass. Herman Cain was accused in 2012 of the same kind of behavior that they also gave Bill Clinton a pass on. This is blatant political hypocrisy.
  • So glad to hear another women to say what I was thinking. I do believe this woman. She needs closure and she is angry. However, how far do we go back
  • for allegations? We all did stupid things as teenagers. The question for me would be, "has anyone else experienced this behavior with him as an adult?
  • High School really. Why wasn't that brought out before now? I'm against his nomination but this is crazy
  • Any Man this day and age I’m sure has made a pass or has grabbed a woman or has groped a girl whether in high school or college. I am a 31-year-old woman who has had men grab me inappropriately a few times and you just have to put them in their place.Does that make them a bad man now? No.
  • If these incidents are so traumatic why don't the women go to the police when evidence is fresh instead of waiting years and decades later I don't get it.
  • Hillary Clinton is paying her
  • Follow the money. Whos paying her lawyer.
  • It's delay tactics on the part of the Democrats till the elections so that they can turn the tide and get someone in that they wany
  • Does she have history with a therapist where she mentioned this action so there is evidence
  • Republicans are the most innocent and honest people on earth
  • Who cares if it happened. That was 35 years ago.
  • So this alleged incident from high school defines the man in 2018? That is both unreasonable and absurd.
  • When did we change to guilty until proven innocent
  • How can you say this is not politics as usual? They had information of the incident since July, but wait till now.
  • Dave why aren't you pointing out that she stated that his friend that was at the party pulled him off of her and his friend on national news last night claims he does not recall that or recollect even being at the party
  • DEMOCRAT desperation. Really sad.
  • Can you think of anyone, nominated for anything, being vetted all the way back to high School?
  • 30+ years ago? Why wasn't this brought up before he became judge. Why wait to the highest point in his career to say something. Sounds like someone is out for a payday.
  • It's ridiculous that someone would wait that long to come forward
  • We need to know the truth!  It must be investigated.  Then we can draw conclusions.
  • So glad to hear another women to say what I was thinking. I do believe this woman. She needs closure and she is angry. However, how far do we go back
  • for allegations? We all did stupid things as teenagers. The question for me would be, "has anyone else experienced this behavior with him as an adult?
