On the eve of the Saints’ first preseason contest of 2017, quarterback Drew Brees called into WWL’s Sports Talk program to discuss where he feels the team is headed this year.

The most prolific passer in Saints history was asked whether he’s willing to dial back the black and gold’s aerial show in favor of a more ground-and-pound approach if it would equal a better showing in the win column.

“As far as I go,” Brees said, “I just want to win football games. I want to win football games, make it to the playoffs, and make a run at it when we get there. So however we get there is fine with me. If that means handing the ball off 50 times a game, then I would love that. I would love nothing more than to be Mark Ingram and Adrian Peterson’s biggest cheerleader.

“From game to game, there’s going to be different game-plans and different requirements based upon how we’re playing and who we’re playing. Moreso this year than any year, when you talk about striving for balance and striving for a complementary style of football between pass-game, run-game and then defense, this is the year where we feel like all of that can really come together in a good way.”

While Brees is optimistic about his team’s prospects, he also acknowledged that they’ll have their work cut out for them in the NFC South.

“Every quarterback in our division is a playoff-caliber, Pro-Bowl caliber elite player,” Brees said. “You’re talking about the past two MVP’s [Cam Newton and Matt Ryan] and Jameis Winston, who I believe is one of the brightest young stars in our league, has played extremely well at times and will only get better. Because I think the supporting cast around him continues to get better as they build that team and build that program. Listen, there’s no free lunch in our division. Every team is very, very good, and I think obviously the focal point to all those teams is the quarterback division.”

Brees also said he understands the necessity to get off to a good start.

“If you win, and you win early,” Brees said, “there’s a confidence that comes with that. Because we’ve worked so hard all offseason. We’ve worked on some new things. We’ve built the program. We’ve built the culture and all these things, and you want that to be validated. And it’s validated when you go win. It’s tough when you start off the season slow because it’s easy then to have second thoughts about your preparation or how you’ve done things up to that point. Whereas if you can go out and win games early, then it’s like, ‘Alright.  What we’re doing is working. We’ve just got to continue to build on it, continue to trust it, and trust the process.’ It’s easy to trust the process when you’re winning, and that’s what we’ve got to do.”

Brees and the Saints are facing a tough slate to start the year with road trips against the Vikings and the Panthers sandwiched around a Week 2 home opener against the Super Bowl champion Patriots. The Saints then travel to London in Week 4 to face off with the Dolphins.

The road starts Thursday night though with preseason contest #1 in Cleveland against the Browns. Kickoff is set for 7pm. Our coverage on WWL starts at 3 that afternoon. You can hear the full audio of Bobby Hebert and Deke Bellavia’s chat with Drew Brees by clicking on the podcast link.
