Saints quarterback Drew Brees joined WWL Radio for his weekly “QB To QB” segment with Bobby Hebert Wednesday night, and he discussed the importance of continuing their pre-bye week surge when they return to action this weekend.

“It’s been good to get back to work,” Brees said. “Obviously we started to pick up some momentum there over the last two weeks. It’s good to get back from London and get the jetlag out, get some time to recharge the batteries. We’re excited to continue the season here and hopefully continue the momentum.”

After starting the season 0-2, the Saints won two straight before their week off, beating the Panthers in Charlotte, then the Dolphins in London. Now they get three of their next four games at home, beginning Sunday against the Detroit Lions in the Superdome. Brees said it’s an opponent they’ve grown quite familiar with.

“We’ve played these guys a bunch,” Brees said. “I think we’ve played them seven times. This’ll be the eighth time in our last 12 years. That’s quite a bit considering they’re not in our division.

“Matthew Stafford’s been the quarterback for seven of those eight,” Brees continued. “He’s a great player. He’s one of those guys where their team always has a chance. They’ve got the ability to score and score quickly. He’s got some great talent around him as well.”

Brees then talked about the members of Detroit’s roster that most concerns him, the defense.

“Really high energy group,” Brees said. “They fly around. Really good in every aspect of their defense. They do a great job taking the ball away, creating opportunities for their offense.”

The Saints’ signal-caller also broke down where he feels the offense faltered during the team’s pair of season-opening losses and why they’re now trending upward.

“I think we’ve continued to improve,” Brees said. “I felt like after those first two weeks, we were moving the ball well. We just weren’t getting the result in the end that we wanted. We were getting stopped in the red zone and having to settle for field goals… You’ve got to get touchdowns if you get the opportunity.”

Brees and the Saints host the Lions Sunday at noon on WWL. Pregame coverage starts at 8am. You can hear the full audio of “QB To QB” by clicking the podcast link.
