When Saints quarterback Taysom Hill was still at BYU, he received a text from an unknown number after helping the Cougars earn a win.

He did what most would do when that happens.

“Then a few weeks went by and I got another message and it signed off as Steve,” Hill recalled. “And I quickly realized that it was Steve Young.”

Hill laughed as he told reporters after Thursday’s practice that unintentionally left the NFL Hall-of-Famer on read. However, there don’t seem to be any hard feelings from the San Fransisco 49ers great as Hill now considers Young a mentor.

Saints coach Sean Payton recently compared Hill to Young and the 6-foot-2, 220-pound quarterback said he was humbled by the comparison to “a guy that I look up to and admire." He said he's even tried to mimic the play of his fellow BYU alum.

“I think the comparison is easy to make because Steve ran around and made plays and stuff that way,” Hill said. “But Steve was one of the best to ever play, so I’m certainly not in a position to where I’m going to be making those comparisons.”

Hill has spent the past three seasons with the Saints and last year found playing time as a quarterback, tight end, running back as well as played on 80 percent of New Orleans special team snaps.

He said he was happy with his role on the team as it gets him on the field and is focused on being improving not on being the next Steve Young.

“At the end of the day you’ve just got to continue to be as good as you possibly can,” Hill said.
