Drew Brees is set to have surgery on his right thumb this afternoon, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed Wednesday morning.

Brees, the NFL’s all-time leading passer, injured his thumb in Sunday’s 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and sought a second opinion before opting to have the surgery. Payton said he wouldn’t speculate on a recovery time for his quarterback.

“But I know just having texts with him and visiting with our trainers and doctors that we are optimistic,” he said.

Payton also said that the current plan is not to place Brees on injured reserve adding "we’ll look at that each week as we go."

By not placing Brees on injured reserve, he will still count against the Saints' 53-man roster but could return to the lineup sooner. He would have to spend at least six weeks on IR and then practice for two weeks before he could return to the active roster.

In the meantime, the Saints will face the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday with two quarterbacks on the roster, Teddy Bridgewater, who played the remainder of last Sunday's game, and Taysom Hill. Payton said he likely won’t name a starter ahead of the matchup.

“That’s just typically what we don’t do,” he said.
