Drew Brees announced Tuesday that he was planning to for his 20th NFL season and Saints head coach Sean Payton said he was excited when he heard that the Pro Bowl quarterback would be back in 2020.

“Look, I’m excited because I know exactly how he’s played last year,” Payton told WWL’s Bobby Hebert and Kristian Garic on Sports Talk. “He’s playing at an elite level still.”

Brees turned 41 in January after passing for 2,979 yards and 27 touchdowns while nearly matching a career-best by completing 74.3 percent of his passes last season.

He missed five games with an injured thumb, but was still able to become the NFL’s all-time leader in touchdown passes last year.

Brees is currently the NFL's all-time leader in yards, completions and completion percentage as well.

Despite him playing at a high level, Payton said he honestly wasn’t sure what the quarterback’s decision would be.

The Sains head coach did try to suggest to Brees that he still could make an impact on the field.

“One text I sent him, I said ‘There’s 500,000 people that are as talented as you in the business world’ and I think Drew is extremely talented that way.  ‘There might be 10 people as talented as you if you want to get into TV.  And then probably two or three if you want to play quarterback,’” Payton said.

Payton said he expects Brees and the Saints to come to an agreement on a contract in an efficient manner.
