Brees: Saints vs. Rams is 'important' because it's the next game

Team not thinking about last year's NFC Championship Game

They New Orleans Saints head to Los Angeles this weekend to face the Rams.

The last time the two teams met was in the NFC Championship Game where the now infamous “NOLA No-Call” took place. That play saw Rams defensive back Nickell Robey-Coleman not get flagged for pass interference despite appearing to hit Saints receiver Tommylee Lewis early and contributed to the Saints loosing in the title game.

But that’s not the focus in the Saints' locker room where players insisted Sunday was just an opportunity to win.

“It’s a big game because it’s the next game on schedule,” Saints linebacker Demario Davis said.

Nearly every player said the same thing about Sunday’s matchup.

“We were able to go 1-0 this past week, now we have another opportunity to go 2-0,” receiver Michael Thomas said. “So it’s the next big game.”

The Saints were in this position last year as they faced the Minnesota Vikings who’d eliminated them from the playoffs the year before with a game-winning touchdown as time expired.

“They scheduled it on Sunday Night Football, they’re going to make a big deal of us going back to Minneapolis,” Saints quarterback Drew Brees said. “I can tell you that was the last thing anybody was talking about about around here. That was just another big game against a really good opponent where we’ve got to go and get a W.”

The Saints won that matchup 30-20 and Brees said New Orleans is taking the same approach heading into this game.

“We can put together all the storylines we want,” Brees said. “Bottom line is they are a really, really good football team. They have the same goals and aspirations. We just happened to be the two teams last year that were kind of at the top and had a chance to play in that NFC Championship to go to the Super Bowl.

“Unfortunately that one didn’t go our way… It's a very important game because it's the next game. It's a very important game because it's against an opponent that we know has a great chance of being there at the end, just like we hope to be.

“There's implications that come along with that. But, let's just go out and play this game to win the game because it's the next game.”

Saints coach Sean Payton said, if anything, last year’s game just give the Saints “amount of respect for the caliber of football team that they are.”

“Well coached, great players all over the place,” Payton said. “I think really more than anything, just having played them twice last year, just makes you realize what a great football team it is coming in at our place and what a high level of game we're going to need to play to compete with them.”

Saints players said that is their focus.

“All I got to do is execute and do my job and prepare,” Thomas said. “That’s what allows me to be successful on Sundays.”
