Brees glad Thomas is close to records, just don't tell him how close

Drew Brees said Michael Thomas is on pace to “do some pretty remarkable things.”

Just don’t tell him exactly what those are.

“I don't want to know what he has. I don't want to know what he's on pace for. I just want to play ball and if he's open I'm going to throw it to him,” Brees said.

The fourth-year receiver already has the most catches in NFL history through 10 games and has a chance to break the former Indianapolis Colts receiver Marvin Harrison’s single season record of 143.

Thomas is currently on pace to catch over 150 passes.

“It would be great. It would be awesome. It would be incredible,” Brees said. “That would be quite an accomplishment.”

A reporter asked Brees Wednesday if he planned to throw it to Thomas more and the Saints’ quarterback joked: “Is that possible?”

Thomas has nearly double the targets of any other Saints player and more than all of the other New Orleans receivers combined.

Those numbers are even more impressive considering that Brees missed five games while he recovered from thumb surgery.

“Listen, he's a special guy,” Brees said. “Tell Mike the route, he'll assess the coverage, he'll know how he needs to run it based upon who he is running against as well because he studies the guys, right? He knows who's defending him, right? He's going to run the route maybe differently versus some guys than others.

“That's part of being a great receiver is understanding that element. He is going to get open. He is going to look you dead in the eye and say, ‘I am going to get open.’ And you believe him, you trust him.

“You anticipate it and you throw it and most of the time he is right. That makes for a great receiver.“
