The Krewe of Zulu kicks Fat Tuesday into high gear today.  Mardi Gras revelers will be seeking out the krewe’s signature throe, painted coconuts.

Zulu riders will hand out thousands of the prized items along the parade route.  But the excitement of catching a coconut is shadowed by two people killed when they were run over by a float in the Nyx and Endymion parade.

Krewe official Clarence Becnel says this Mardi Gras season, people have to be safe when reaching for a coconut. “We want everybody to exercise extreme caution,” Becnel said. “We don’t want anybody to get hurt or anybody going under a float or anything, it’s not worth it. You know be very careful in trying to get these coconuts that are the main thing.”

Zulu began parading down its uptown route at 8:00 a.m.
