Just after midnight there was gunfire on Bourbon Street.

"The NOPD is investigating a shooting in the 900 block of Bourbon Street," Public Information Officer Aaron Looney said in an email.

Initial reports showed a male victim suffering an apparent gunshot wound.

A short time later, Looney said the victim was a female "with an apparent gunshot wound to the face," and she was dead.

"A male subject was detained at the scene by Louisiana State Police and French Quarter Task Force officers for questioning in this investigation. "No arrests have been made as of this writing," he wrote around 2:45am.

However, jail records show a man named Alexander Kirby was booked on a 2nd degree murder charge just before 6:00am.

The New Orleans Advocate reports the victim was 33-year-old Shay De St. Germain. Their source tells them De St. Germain was at the Clover Grill in the 900 block of Bourbon where her boyfriend worked. Kirby, her ex-boyfriend, arrived to confront them. During the altercation, the source said Kirby pulled a gun and De St. Germain ended up shot in the face.

Looney added, "Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact Eighth District Detective Aaron Harrelson or Homicide Detective Brett Mathes at 504-658-5300, or call anonymously to Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP."
