Woman hit by float, killed during Nyx Parade

Update: Police say victim was 58-year-old female who "went to reach for beads and was stuck between tandem floats."

Police confirm that there was a fatal accident during the Nyx Parade.

It happened as the largest krewe in Mardi Gras was parading on Magazine Street in New Orleans Wednesday night.

An email from the public affairs division said, "The NOPD is investigating a traffic fatality at the intersection of Magazine and Cadiz streets. Initial reports show an adult female victim."

The parade was diverted off of the main route to go around the scene.

Witnesses say the woman stepped in between the front float and back float of a tandem float, was struck by the second float and killed.

It was about half way through the parade.  The first 20 floats continued on the route.  Bands and other walking groups were rerouted around the scene and then continued to parade.  The reamaining floats were not able to roll down the route.
