Will tariffs mean fewer or more expensive Mardi Gras throws?

Nothing like catching loads of Mardi Gras beads at your favorite parades, but could those throws imported from China be affected by the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration?

The last round of tariffs imposed went into place in late September.

"From what we understand, as of this moment, Mardi Gras beads have not hit the list of items imposed to tariff, that could change any day," said Dan Kelly, owner of Beads by the Dozen in Harahan.

Plush items have also not been affected.

Kelly says what was involved were items like feather masks and feather boas, and fees could end up rising as much as 25 percent after the first of the year.

He says, however, they do not know if beads and stuffed animals will be included in the next round of new taxes on imports from China.

He believes if that happens where beads, plush items and all other throws are affected it would impact float riders.

"I think they'll just reduce the quantity of products that they purchase," he said.

That would mean fewer throws flying to parade goers.  So far, though, that is not the case.
