Voluntary evacuation issued for the town of Jean Lafitte, and unincorporated Barataria and Crown Point

Officials fear water will cover roads

Residents in lower Jefferson are urged to get out before the tides get too high for them to safely leave.

"President Michael S. Yenni and Mayor Timothy P. Cerner have issued a Voluntary Evacuation for the Town of Jean Lafitte, Barataria, Lower Lafitte, and Crown Point due to the rising tide caused by Tropical Storm Cindy," Public Information Officer Rhonda Collins said in a news release this afternoon.

The release said that roads were still open.

The fear is that water will soon cover the roads and could get into homes with the high tide.

A shelter was opened for people who wanted a place to stay.

"Jefferson Parish PARD Playground, located at 5185 Eighty Aren’t Road in Marrero will open today as a receiving center at 3:00pm."
