Northshore cops say a gun left on a counter in a Livingston home led to a toddler killing himself.

"LPSO was dispatched to the 18,000 block of Murphy Estate Lane located in Livingston, LA in reference to a gun shot," Public Information Officer Lori Steele said in a news release. "Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 2 year old male... with a gunshot wound to the face."

Investigators say the loaded handgun was not secured.

Sheriff Jason Ard says, "During our preliminary investigation, we learned that a handgun was on a counter in the home.  It’s believed the child, using a stool, was able to grab the gun - which then fired a single shot.  The child was later pronounced dead at a local hospital."

The sheriff says as of Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been filed.

"This investigation continues."
