Suspect in custody following a deadly shooting

Slidell Police say they have a suspect in custody following a deadly shooting Sunday night during a family gathering for Father's Day.  

The incident happened around 8:45 p.m.  Several residents reported gunfire in the 1300 block of Sunset Drive.  When officer arrived they found40-year-old Eric Brown laying in the street and suffering from several gunshot wounds.  Brown was pronounced dead at the hospital. 

Police say James Chaney, and his aunt’s fiancé, Eric Brown, got into a verbal argument in the back yard.  At some point, James Chaney armed himself with a firearm. The argument then continued into the street and turned physical. Subsequently, James Chaney allegedly fired several shots at Eric Brown, striking him several times. Eric Brown ran down the street, where he later collapsed.

Investigators recovered the 9mm semi-automatic pistol inside the residence and charged 32-year-old James Chaney with one count of second degree murder.
