New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has launched an initiative known as ''Cure Violence" and it's funded with 1.5 million dollars in federal grant money.

The violence-reduction model, similar to Chicago's "Cease Fire" program, will send conflict resolution teams to speak with families of trauma victims in some of the toughest neighborhoods in the city.

LSU Health Criminologist Peter Scharf says the program is promising.

''It's better than just putting kids in jail, I think this has huge potential but we have to constantly tweak the program and improve it,'' Scharf said.

Scharf also says has some questions about the effort.

''How do we put all the effort on targeting the kids who are really living that life and are likely to become victims or perpetrators,'' said Scharf.

In addition the city will operate a victims protection program. where contractors will offer internships to young people who might otherwise become ensnared in violence.
