A private service will be held later in the day before Mr. Kern is laid to rest.

Kern has been involved with Mardi Gras celebrations dating back to 1932.

He was classically trained by masters in the arts in Europe and even turned down a job offer from Walt Disney to concentrate on making the Fat Tuesday celebration his canvas.

His whimsical creations changed Mardi Gras, made it bright and open for all to enjoy.
