Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development officials say the contractor hired to make repairs to the Sunshine Bridge over the Mississippi River will be on site this weekend. Coastal Bridge will begin building a platform to help them access the portion of the bridge that was damaged.

Last week, a crane that was being taken along the river by barge hit the bridge, bending the steel girders of its supports. The bridge has been closed to all traffic since then as a safety precaution.

"This is an extremely complex repair and the planning and design phase is crucial to ensure the work is done correctly, safely and is the best use of state taxpayer money," said DoTD Secretary Shawn D. Wilson, Ph.D. "Unfortunately, the bridge must remain closed until repairs are made and inspections indicate that it’s safe for use."

Commuters in the area that need to cross the river either must use ferry service or detour to the Veterans Memorial Bridge between Gramercy and Wallace, about 20 miles downriver and roughly a half-hour away.
