Sunshine Bridge partially reopens Saturday

(WWL.com) - Good news for the thousands of motorists who use the Sunshine Bridge in St. James Parish.

The bridge was closed last month for repairs after a barge hit the structure, but after testing and inspections, it will be partially reopened Saturday.

DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett said this comes after crews have been working around the clock on repairs.

"We have a pretty good plan put together.  They've been out there working hard.  We got one of the main cords replaced," said Mallett.

Mallett insisted the bridge is safe, but there will be some restrictions for drivers.

"There's going to be a speed restriction of 45 miles per hour and a width restriction of 11 feet," said Mallett.

Mallett said with only one lane in each direction opening, drivers can still expect some delays.

"It's not full capacity, so there is going to be congestion, but this is going to be an easier ride for a lot of people," said Mallett.
