Rising water on the Tchefuncte River has prompted an emergency declaration in St. Tammany Parish.

"Residents in neighborhoods along both sides of the Tchefuncte River, particularly in low-lying areas that have seen flood waters in the past, should be aware of the possibility of flooding, and those residents should also consider voluntary evacuation," the parish announced in a news release this afternoon.

"Residents are encouraged to stay up-to-date on the forecast, and to cooperate with requests from emergency officials, and to obey any traffic signs and barricades indicating impassable roads and high water. If you feel that you are in danger, please make the decision to evacuate out of harm’s way. If you need assistance doing so, call 911."

Torrential rain overnight has swollen riverbeds on the Northshore, including the Tchefuncte, Bogue Chitto, and Bogue Falaya.
