St. John Parish firefighter charged with smuggling $150,000 in marijuana

A veteran firefighter for the St. John the Baptist Fire Department faces federal drug charges after he was caught smuggling 154 pounds of marijuana in from Mexico.

As WWL-TV reports, Michael Eric Moscona was arrested at a border checkpoint in McAllen Texas about 2 weeks ago. He was booked with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

He returned to Louisiana on June 24 after being released from a jail in Texas.

Accroding to DEA Agent Gilberto Nieves, Moscona confessed to trying to smuggle the marijuana from Mexico into Ponchatoula Louisiana and that he had done it before in his personal truck in the months before his arrest.

DEA agenst say the 154 pounds of weed is worth about $150,000. Border agents found the bundles of pot in Moscona’s toolbox on the bed of his truck.

As of this afternoon, the St. John Fire Department placed Moscona on administrative leave with pay pending an internal investigation, according to St. John Parish Communications Director Baileigh Rebowe Helm.
