A single engine private plane pilot ditched his aircraft off I-10 near Baton Rouge this morning, Louisiana State Police say. It happened near the Highland Road exit.

Authorities say the pilot was the only one on board, and he suffered minor injuries.

The Advocate reports the pilot, James Ritter, said he had taken off from Baton Rouge Regional Airport and was making a short hop to Louisiana Regional near Donaldsonville when the engine of the Piper Cherokee began shuddering and then locked up.

He picked I-10 to make an emergency landing, but said he skimmed an 18-wheeler and ended up in the trees off to the side of the highway.
