Police say they have solved the case of someone seen on a Facebook video damaging a statue of a pelican know as Rex the Pelican.

"Slidell Police have made an arrest on the person responsible for damaging a fiberglass pelican," Slidell Police Detective Daniel Seuzeneau said in a news release. "The victim posted a video of the incident on Facebook, which went viral and helped with the identification of the suspect."

He says the suspect vandalized the statue twice.

"Early on Sunday morning, 33-year-old, Steven Mortrud (Slidell, LA), intentionally knocked a painted fiberglass pelican off its pedestal, causing significant damage to it," according to Seuzeneau.

Then, the man came back.

"For unknown reasons, Mortrud returned to the scene of the crime to examine the damage, and then proceeded to kick the head of the pelican down the sidewalk."

Seuzeneau says Mortrud turned himself in to Slidell Police Monday.
