Eighteen generators are being hooked up to the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board power system to augment backup power through the rest of this hurricane season, city officials said today. The work should be completed Monday.

The 18 generators are the first among 26 that have been ordered in the wake of a fire that knocked out one of the Sewerage and Water Board's existing five turbines. Three turbines were already out of service for repairs.

The city reports the turbine damaged in this week's fire is running, after crews succesfull repaired it and broght it back online.

The loss of that turbine left the drainage system with just one working turbine. City officials said that turbine alone could not generate enough energy to run all of the pumps at drainage stations west of the Industrial Canal. New Orleans East, Lower 9th Ward, and Algiers drainage pumps were not affected.
