Severe weather wrecks Bayou Boogaloo, floods streets

Some buildings take on water as pumps struggle to keep up

A severe thunderstorm that hit New Orleans this afternoon drenched the area with several inches of rain, and tossed tents, tables, and chairs being set up for this weekend's Bayou Boogaloo.

The Boogaloo had to cancel for Friday night due to the wreckage. Wind gust flipped over the food booths and toppled portable toilets.

Channel 4 Chief Meteorologist Carl Arredondo says as much as four inches came down in a short time in some areas, overwhelming pumps. Sewerage and Water Board officials said 115 of 120 pumps were operating with more than enough power to keep them running. 

The storm also knocked out power to as many as 9,000 Entergy customers in New Orleans an Jefferson Parish.
