One year ago today, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was fighting for his life after he was shot on a baseball field in Virginia. Today, he’ll play second base in the same Congressional Charity baseball game.

His physical recovery is considered remarkable and his political future looks bright, as he has a chance to become the next Speaker of the House.

Scalise says there have been many difficult days but he's back.

"To be able to get back and do the job I love, I really did love doing my job representing southeast Louisiana in Congress, to be able to have the ability to comeback," said Scalise.

Scalise made it through nine surgeries and many emotional days in and out of the hospital.

"I think the lowest point was the first time I saw my kids It was tough for them to absorb something like this that your dad was shot somebody tried to kill me, for at the time a ten and eight year-old, that's really tough," Scalise said.

He thanks his family for helping him get through all of this, the Republican from Metairie has had multiple surgeries and at one point was told he might not walk again.
