Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards today said he is opposed to New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell's suggestion to use some of the hotel taxes collected in New Orleans to pay for upgrades to the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board's dilapidated infrastructure, according to a report in The New Orleans Advocate.

Louisiana Senate President John Alario is also not a fan of the idea, which likely dooms the proposal that Cantrell says she would bring to the legislature.

That revenue currently funds the Morial Convention Center, Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and various hospitality groups. The governor said with the Super Bowl returning to New Orleans in 2024, he doesn't want to divert money from those facilities.

Cantrell wants to use a portion of the roughly $100 million those taxes generate annually for pipes, pumps, and turbines.
