It's a merrier Christmas this year for 735 Louisiana children: they now have families! That's how many kids were adopted out of state foster care from October 2015 to September 2016.

532 families adopted the kids out of foster homes. Department of Children and Family Services Secretary Marketa Garner Walters says they're pretty excited:

"I don't know how we'll top it," said Walter. "I think this may be the peak year."

That's a new record for the Department of Children and family Service. But Walters says a lot of kids still need permanent homes.

"There's still 200 children that have not found a home," she said.

Walter says all of the the kids in foster care in Louisiana are recovering from being neglected and abused. Many, she says, aren't even five years old.
