The U.S. fuel economy index is seeing its first decline in four years. And, Louisiana motorists are reaping the benefits at the gas pump.

"We're looking at prices right now in Louisiana that are almost 30 cents, more than 30 cents cheaper than they were a month ago," says Triple A fuel analyst Don Redman.

And, he says it comes as a bit of a surprise.

"All year long, we've been comparing 2018 prices to 2017, and we're always higher. But actually, right now, we're about 10 cents cheaper than we were at this time last year."

Gas prices below 2 dollars a gallon are becoming a common sight in the metro area. And, the best is likely yet to come.

"The further we get into winter, when we get into January and February, those are traditionally some of the best prices you'll see because the demand for gasoline is so low."

Redman says the entire state may soon see prices like those currently in the metro area.

"It's very possible that by the time we get to Christmas and into the new year, that the statewide average will be 2 dollars or under 2 dollars a gallon."

As of Monday, the price for regular unleaded is at $2.15 per gallon in Louisiana.

In New Orleans, the price at the pump is at $2.13 a gallon.
