Popeyes is selling chicken battered in Champagne and coated in edible gold today.  It is available at the location at 621 Canal Street in New Orleans today.

There are three other locations in the US participating in the promotion as part of marking the chain's 3,000th location opening.

"We wanted to share this celebration with our fans, so our chefs cooked up something extra special for them," Popeyes President Alex Santoro in a news release. "It’s a fun way for guests to celebrate this milestone right along with us."

It comes 46 years after Popeyes was first opened.

"Founded in 1972, Popeyes owes its beginnings to entrepreneur and culinary innovator, Al Copeland. With one small restaurant and a big idea, Copeland introduced the New Orleans-style fried chicken that has now made the brand famous throughout the world," the company says on its website. "Popeyes culinary heritage is built upon the rich Cajun and creole flavor profiles that are unmistakably Louisiana. We continuously draw upon and celebrate this heritage to inspire new, authentic menu creations the world craves."

The first restaurant was actually named "Chicken on the Run" and opened in Arabi.  Copeland was serving traditional fried chicken initially.

"After several months of lackluster performance, he reopens the restaurant as “Popeyes” (after Popeye Doyle of The French Connection). This time he sells spicy, New Orleans-style chicken."

It was in 1976 that Popeyes opened the first franchise restaurant in Louisiana.

The company was sold to Restaurant Brands International last year for $1.8 billion.

RBI also owns Burger King and Tim Hortons.

Oh, the gold-coated chicken is selling for $5.

In addition to the New Orleans location, it is also on sale in one location New York, one in New Jersey and one in California.
