New Orleans has the highest per-capita death rate due to the COVID-19 coronavirus, according to The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate.

With 46 deaths reported in New Orleans so far, that accounts for one out of every 10,000 residents. Jefferson Parish, with 12 deaths, comes in sixth in the nation among counties -- 1 death for every 36,000 residents.

The report suggests the true numbers could be higher, because deaths that may have been due to the coronavirus were classified simply as pneumonia.

Meanwhile, data compiled by Johns Hopkins University finds more than 82,400 coronavirus cases in the United States -- more than China, where the pandemic began. China also has a population more than four times greater than the United States
