One bad thought can ruin your entire day

Bad vibes truly a downer

It appears there really are such things as 'bad vibes.' 

You can start the day off feeling great, then comes one mean comment, or you just see or hear a negative news story.

Bam! You’re in a bad mood for the rest of the day.

"It's because our thoughts, our feelings and our actions are all connected to each other," says Dr. Michelle Moore, LSU Health New Orleans Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Licensed Clinical Psychologist.

"So, if we start to think in a negative way, we'll start to feel negative and maybe even start to have negative actions."

Though positive comments or input can have the opposite effect, negative feelings tend to stick with us more than positive ones. 

"It's almost the same concept as when you frown," says Moore. "It's easier to frown. It takes more effort to smile. So, it does take more effort to be positive, to think in a positive way and to be optimistic." 

She says being optimistic is something that needs to be worked on every day, just like exercise. 

"Develop a self-awareness allowing you to be in tune with your emotions, so you know how you're feeling and can decide what to do about it." 

How to boost a bad mood?

"Think happy thoughts, just like they say in childrens' stories. Talk to a friend. Enjoy being outdoors and being active. Or, find a moment to take deep breaths and relax."
