Northshore couple charged with baby's murder

Cops have charged a Slidell area couple with second degree murder of a three month old baby.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office says they changed the charges against Kevin Scott and Samantha Hotard after the coroner ruled the infants death was murder.

"After the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office made a ruling on the manner of death in this case, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Investigators upgraded the charges," Captain Scott Lee said in an email.

They earlier charged the pair with cruelty.

"On Monday, (April 8), the STPSO was contacted to conduct an investigation into the death of a three-month-old male child who was found unresponsive in a Slidell-area home.  The child was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.," according to the initial news release.

Investigators said the baby had a broken arm, evidence of alleged abuse.

"The child’s remains were turned over to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office for autopsy, where it was determined the child suffered a non-accidental fracture to the right arm."
The investigation continues.

The coroner released the following:

St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston has ruled on the cause and manner of death of a 3-month-old child who died last month after being found unresponsive at a Slidell-area home.

Kristian Scott, age 3 months, died April 8 of complications from an untreated arm fracture and malnutrition. Preston has ruled the Manner of Death was homicide.

Scott's parents were arrested by the Sheriff's Office in early April on various cruelty charges. Following Preston's ruling yesterday, investigators re-booked the couple with upgraded charges. Information about the criminal element of the case will be released by the Sheriff's Office.
