A New Orleans Police officer faces a rape charge after Kenner Police arrested him over the weekend.

Kenner Police say 28-year-old William Burford was drinking with the alleged victim and a mutual acquaintance at a residence in Kenner. The woman went to sleep and told Kenner police she awoke to find Burford having sex with her.

"He stated that the acts were consensual, however, he indicated he never received the victim's permission to do so," said Lt. Brian McGregor with Kenner Police, noting that an intoxicated person cannot consent.

Burford was booked Saturday on a charge of third degree rape.

The NOPD has placed Burford on unpaid suspension pending an internal investigation.

"William Burford has been placed on emergency suspension without pay while this incident is being investigated by the Public Integrity Bureau," according to a statement from NOPD Communications Director Beau Tidwell. "Burford joined the department as a recruit in December of 2015, and was serving as an officer in the Fifth District prior to this incident."

Tidwell said Burford's actions "in no way reflect the values of the NOPD."
