New Orleans Police are investigating a shooting death that happened early this morning in St. Roch.

According to police, a homeowner in the 2300 block of Franklin Ave. heard an alarm indicating his shed had been broken into.

Cops say the homeowner armed himself with two handguns and went outside to investigate. There, he confronted two suspects trying to steal a generator.

"When confronted, one of the suspects turned around and faced him," according to NOPD spokesman Gary Scheets. "The victim then fired multiple shots striking one of the suspects in the chest. The second suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction."

Officers arrived to find the injured man lying on the ground. Paramedics took him to the hospital where he later died.
