Four homes engulfed in flames

New Orleans firefighters were called to a massive blaze Friday evening. According to the NOFD, it happened about 12:48 p.m. in the 1700 block of Governor Nicholls Street.

NOFD says when fire crews arrived at the home was completely engulfed and on the brink of collapse. Four homes in total were on fire. The primary building which was an abandoned four-plex, an abandoned double which was boarded up, a single-family home unoccupied at the time of the incident, and a shoe store that had been closed for over a year.

It took 21 NOFD units and 56 firefighters to finally contain the fire. The fire was contained about 3:00 this evening. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. No one was seriously injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
