When it comes to healthcare and New Orleans, this town's got a lot to offer:  "We're one of only 17 cities in America that has two medical schools," Jeanette Weiland explains.  She's the Senior Director of Bio-Business Development for the New Orleans Business Alliance—the host agency of the New Orleans Health Innovators Challenge.

The New Orleans Health Innovators Challenge is a unique event presented by the Alliance and sponsored by a number of local healthcare providers and organizations.  Each year they issue challenges nationally-and-worldwide to bio-medical-technical entrepreneurs and investors.

The participating organizations include Tulane Health, Tulane Medical School, New Orleans Health Department, Ochsner, Blue Cross and Blue Shield and LCMC. New Orleans Business Alliance talked the aim of the challenge:

"One impetus is to help find innovative solutions and technologies that might not be on the mass market today," Weiland explains.  "But [these innovations] could be piloted within specific groups and scaled from there."

Weiland says the other aim of the challenge is to bring more bio-business development to New Orleans:

"We would love for more digital health companies to take advantage of the state's tech-tax incentives and view New Orleans as a fantastic city and business environment for them to land here and grow."

With the bio-medical district stretching up Canal Street from the Downtown Elevated to Broad Street, the possibilities of working top-of-line organizations in bio-medical technology research and development are endless.

"We have a thriving bio-district, we have multiple healthcare systems, we have a bio-tech incubator, we have bio-tech companies, and we have the most powerful tech-tax incentives in the country," Weiland says.

This, unlike in the past, the Innovators Challenge is being presented live on Facebook. "In the first two years we had a live event, and we thought that in the spirit of promoting innovation, we should be innovative ourselves and go ahead and try this on line!" Weiland says.  "That way people can tune in from all over the world and listen into the live description of the unveiling of the challenge this year."
