New Orleans drivers to get three chances before being booted

The New Orleans City Council today voted 7-0 to revert to a three-strikes policy before the city immobilizes a vehicle for unpaid parking tickets.

In 2009, the council voted to boot vehicles after just one unpaid parking ticket went delinquent for 90 days. Enough people complained about the policy that this year, the Louisiana legislature was considering intervening.

Councilman Jared Brossett said people who come to City Hall to handle business and have the parking meter expire shouldn't have their entire day interrupted over a single ticket.

"All outstanding tickets, delinquency fees and the boot fee must be paid before the boot is removed," said Brossett. "This can easily cost someone several hundred dollars."
