New Orleans City Council President Jason Williams pleaded not guilty today to federal tax fraud charges.

The U.S. government accuses Williams of elven counts of tax fraud. Williams says he is the victim of bad accounting by Henry Timothy Jr., his former tax preparer. Prosecutors claim Williams conspired with another defendant, Nicole Burdett, to lie about Williams' expenses, making them appear larger than they actually were in order to reduce his tax liability.

"If a taxpayer commits a crime when their tax preparer makes a mistake, half of America would be in trouble," Williams said last month when he addressed the investigation of him. "I hired someone who misrepresented himself as a CPA, paid him to do my tax returns for years, and filed the returns that he prepared."

Williams and Burdett have filed suit against Timothy claiming Timothy lied about his credentials as a CPA.
