The New Orleans City Council today added its voice to the chorus of disapproval of President Trump's handling of families trying to cross the U.S./Mexico border.

"As to why we, as New Orleans City Council members are speaking about this issue, this national issue, and my response is, 'Why would we not?'" said Councilmember Helena Moreno. "As human beings, we should speak out for proper treatment of children, whether they are in New Orleans or not."

The council unanimously approved a resolution stating their opposition.

Councilmember Cyndi Nguyen recalled her own immigrant experience.

"When I'm sitting here, thinking back, 43 years ago, when we were on the boat coming over from Vietnam, and just having the feeling of not seeing my dad or my mom terrifies me," she said. "As a parent, or an uncle or aunt, you don't want to be apart from your children or your niece or your nephew."
