The National Hurricane Center says we could see a named storm in the Gulf soon.

"Showers and thunderstorms associated with a broad area of low pressure located over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico continue to show signs of organization," Senior Hurricane Specialist Jack Beven said. "Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for additional development."

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Louisiana coast from Grand Isle to the mouth of the Pearl River. A tropical storm warning has also been issued for the northern Gulf coast from Mississippi/Alabama state line to the Ochlockonee River in Florida, and a tropical storm watch is in effect Ochlockonee River to Yankeetown, Florida..

He says there's an 80% chance of the system becoming Tropical or Subtropical Storm Nestor today or tonight.

"Regardless of development, the system is likely to produce gusty winds and rough surf."

WWL TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum says most of the impacts look to stay south and east of Louisiana.

"Right now, it looks like this system will track just offshore of Louisiana on Friday," he explained. "It will be close enough to send some scattered showers and thunderstorms over the New Orleans area. The heaviest rains will be along the coast."

Any rain that does make it into the metro area is expected to end by Saturday morning.

"We will have winds around 10-15 mph and coastal flooding. Tides will be around 1-2 feet above normal. The clouds and rain will keep high temperatures in the mid 70s," according to Nussbaum."
