"Two males were involved in a verbal altercation when one subject produced a gun and started shooting," according to a report in the NOPD Major Offense Log. "The second subject returned fire. The victim was struck in the crossfire."

It happened after 7:30pm Wednesday at 8731 Birch St. a few blocks from the River.

"The victim was declared deceased at the scene."

The report only describes the suspect as "unknown male."
