Tragedy: Mother, six children die in MS home inferno

The residents of Clinton, Mississippi are in shock today after an early morning housefire took the lives of a mother and her six children.

The mother was 33-years of age, her children ranged in age from one to 15.

The lone survivor of the blaze, the children's father, suffered smoke inhalation, burns, cuts and bruises as he tried unsuccessful to rescue his family from the blaze.

"At about 12:30 a.m. the Clinton Fire Department was called to the scene of a structure fire at 2211 Old Vicksburg Road in east Clinton about a quarter mile from the Jackson line," Mark Jones communications director for the city of Clinton told the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger.

Firefighters needed four engines and a ladder truck to fire the flames.

The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's Office are working the scene, digging through the smoldering debris to try and find the cause of the deadly blaze.

Jones told the paper the home was built in 1951 and there were burglar bars installed on the structure.

It is not known if the bars were able to be released in case of an emergency.

It may be a week before fire investigators uncover the cause of the blaze.

Jones said the family as some of the nicest people he'd met.

He remembered the father and his sons contributing the neighborhood by doing yard work for people nearby.

Jones asked for prayers for the family and those who responded to the fire.

Passing cars are said to slow as they go by the scene off Old Vicksburg and Hobby Farm Road.
