What witnesses say started with police chasing a car, ended with a man dead in the middle of the street on the Westbank.

"They were hauling ass down 4th Street," one witness told WWL First News.  "They ran head on into a car coming from the other way, and one of them come flying out the windshield. So, they got a fatality."

He says there appeared to be two people in the car that cops were reportedly perusing on 4th street before it crashed.

"At around 2:20 pm, Westwego Police Officer spotted the stolen vehicle, a 2015 Toyota Prius, traveling along River Road in the city of Westwego," said the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and Westwego Police Department in a joint statement this afternoon. "The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, and the driver fled. Following a short pursuit, the vehicle crashed into Chevrolet Silverado traveling in the opposite direction in the 7300 block of 4th Street in Marrero."

First responders attempted CPR, but were not successful in reviving the individual. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

"The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office will be handling the traffic crash as it occurred in an unincorporated part of the parish," according to the news release. "The Westwego Police Department will be handling the recovery of the stolen vehicle and the arrest of the driver."

Officials say the driver of the reported stolen vehicle will be booked with  possession of stolen property and aggravated flight from an officer with additional charges possible.
