Man burned to death following an apparent argument

A burned body was found late Friday morning in Gentilly.

Police were flagged down by witnesses about 11:30 a.m. and directed to the closed Winn-Dixie in the 4600 block of Chef Menteur Highway. 

Officer arrived to find the unidentified victim’s body burning near an abandoned loading dock.

Surveillance video showed bystanders rushing to try and aid the victim.

A man with a fire extinguisher ran from a nearby gas station to try to put out the flames. Firefighters who arrived on the scene also used handheld fire extinguishers to put out the fire that engulfed the man.

The man’s upper body was said to be burned to his skeleton. He man was dead by the time police arrived.

The man’s body continued to smolder as authorities began their investigation.

According to witnesses, the victim and his killer were both homeless. 

Police sources say one man knocked out the other before setting his body on fire.

Witnesses said the unidentified assailant attacked the victim because he gave the assailant lice.

The suspect is in police custody, but had not been identified as of Friday evening.

The NOPD, NOFD and State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating.
