A man who was discharged from a hospital today has been arrested for allegedly setting his mother on fire at their home in New Orleans East, according to The New Orleans Advocate.

39-year-old Erik Beasley now faces one count each of second-degree murder and aggravated arson in the murder of 78-year-old Sarah Beasley.

Court records show Beasley has a history of mental illness.

The arrest comes four days after firefighters were sent to the Beasleys’ home in the 4700 block of Corinne Street. Authorities said no blaze was burning when firefighters arrived, but the house was filled with light smoke, and the woman presumed to be Sarah Beasley was lying dead next to a damaged chaise chair.
