A Terrebonne Parish man is in jail on rape, battery, and cruelty to the infirm charges. The sheriff's office says it's thanks to an observant deputy and the bravery of the wheelchair-confined victim, who lived with her alleged assailant.

An anonymous call requesting a welfare check led the Terrebonne patrol deputy to 41-year-old Dennis Bourgeois' residence. The sheriff's office says initially, the deputy was told "all is well," but bruises on the wheelchair-bound woman at the residence led to additional questions.

"The victim provided information that indicated crimes had been committed, and the deputy notified detectives and other resources," said Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Col. Terry Daigre.

Bourgeois was arrested. The victim was taken to a local hospital for examination and treatment.

"This was a good example of the kind of proactive police work we have come to expect of our road patrol deputies," said Daigre. "We also want to make clear to people that anytime they suspect a friend, relative or neighbor is being abused they should call us."
