Saul Garza and Daniel Cabrera hit solo home runs and freshman pitcher Landon Marceaux shook off a shaky start as the 14th ranked LSU Tigers defeated Alabama 5-4 to win the rubber match of the weekend series in Tuscaloosa.

A Josh Smith double down the right field line scored Antoine Duplantis for the first run of the game. Alabama tied it in the next half inning as Marceaux allowed the first three Alabama hitters to reach and Crimson Tide tied the game on a bases loaded walk.

LSU’s offense responded with a three-run third inning. Garza led off the inning with his second home run of the season. A towering shot over the left field wall. A few batters later, Gavin Dugas delivered a two-run single.

Cabrera’s team-leading eighth home run in the fourth inning completed the scoring. LSU had just one hit the rest of the game and finished with seven for the game. Garza had two hits to lead the way to raise his average to .211.

Marceaux (3-2) allowed two runs over five innings to lower his ERA to 6.67.

Matthew Beck pitched well out of the bullpen. The 6-foot-7 junior from Alexandria gave up one run in 2.2 innings.

Devin Fontenot earned his sixth save, but it wasn’t easy. He allowed a run, but got the final out on a strikeout with the bases loaded.

LSU is now 29-16 overall, 13-8 in the sEC and tied for second place.

The Tigers will not have a midweek game, because of final exams. They will host Ole Miss this weekend, starting on Friday. The Rebels, the Tigers and Mississippi State are all tied for second place, behind first place Arkansas.
