LSU faces its biggest test of the new season Saturday when they go up against the Auburn Tigers. Fans will learn a lot from the results of the game.

A win by LSU would make fans euphoric, but expectations aren't high.

"I think for many fans, they're probably anticipating a loss," said WWL.com LSU sports columnist Jeff Palermo. But don't think a narrow loss will be taken by the fans as some kind of "moral victory."

"I've been covering the LSU football program since 2001 and I have yet to see a 'moral victory' in any loss LSU's ever had," he said, "I think, (for) fans, it's either win or go home."

Fans were pretty pumped up after LSU upset the Miami Hurricanes on opening day. Then the lackluster performance against Southeastern last week kind of changed things.

"If they win, I think all of the sudden, you start thinking about, wait a minute, is this team possibly good enough to compete in the SEC West and get to Atlanta?" Palermo said. "If they go into Auburn, win there, and they're 3-0, there will be a lot of excitement with two home games coming up against Louisiana Tech and Ole Miss."

Before the season began, LSU was picked to finish fifth in the SEC West, but they have a chance Saturday to set the tone, and put the rest of the conference on notice.

Both LSU and Auburn opened the season beating top-ten opponents, with Auburn defeating then-sixth ranked Washington, 21-16.  LSU topped Miami 33-17.

The game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Auburn. Coverage begins on WWL-AM/FM at 10:00 a.m.
