A 42-year-old Des Allamands man died in a crash in St. Tammmany Parish early Friday, and state troopers say he was at the wheel of a stolen vehicle. According to Louisiana State Police, the crash on LA 21 near Lavinghouse Rd. claimed the life of Lionel Harris Jr.

"The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that Harris was driving a stolen 2014 Ford Fusion northbound on LA 21 at a high rate of speed," according to Trooper Dustin Dwight. "Harris failed to negotiate a right-hand curve, causing the vehicle to exit the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle crashed into a ditch embankment."

The vehicle was so severely damaged that troopers could not immediately tell if Harris had been wearing a seatbelt or not.

"The front seat passenger, 44-year-old Tammy R. Cowart of Saucier, MS, was properly restrained at the time of the crash. She sustained moderate injury and was transported to an area hospital," said Dwight. "Troopers obtained an arrest warrant on Cowart for Illegal Possession of Stolen Things. She will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail pending her release."
